From Besties to Enemies to Besties: Starring Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Demi Lovato (a deep dive)

Name a more iconic trio than Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Selena Gomez.
The years of drama, the bops, the shows, the tea, the feuds, the fallouts, and so much more were given to us by these women and there’s nothing we here at Scandalous Media love more than a freaking MESS.
Because that’s what the friendships between the 3 have been.
First, it was Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato being besties and then they had a NASTY fallout.
Then it was Selena & Demi vs. Miley & Mandy:

Then, it was the love triangle between Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Nick Jonas and then they had a NASTY fallout.
After that, Miley and Demi became besties while Selena and Taylor Swift joined forces.
Miley and Demi’s friendship fizzled out throughout the years but they’ve had a few reunions … speaking of which, we have an update about all those feud rumors you guys have been asking about for months.
Let’s start off with a bang…
Healthy Competition & Commerical Performance
Miley and Selena used to hate each other. Don’t hit me with any of that “don’t pit women against each other” BS. The same celebs screaming that are the same ones leading the competition and dirty game behind the scenes.
Selena is by nature very competitive as most people are. And that competitive side can be beneficial or harmful because competition can push you to do better and be better.
Miley was very competitive during Bangerz.
She didn’t like that her Can’t Be Tamed era and the Gypsy Hearts Tour was a flop (to her standard, it was successful in the US), and so she came with a BANG with Bangerz… literally.
Before Selena had her identity which is “Sad Single Girl That Everyone Treats Badly After Teen Hurt Her,” she was known by mainstream media as the girl who was not Demi Lovato or Miley Cyrus.
And for a while, Selena felt like an outcast.
We can argue that Selena is more relevant than both of them now which is how that competitive side comes to play because statistics show that both Miley and Demi were ahead of Selena with commercial success for years. Selena had to claw her way up the charts meanwhile Demi and Miley were racking up #1s at 16.
And even though Selena is still not more commercially successful than Miley, she was able to surpass Demi who for a very long time, organically had hits due to her vocal recognition and insane life story that she shared.
I’ll never forget when Heart Attack debuted with 215,000 pure sales (this is before the streaming era) and this was revolutionary at the time.
But she always released music at a competitive time so with that, Heart Attack still debuted at #12 on the Billboard charts meanwhile Selena’s best debut to date was 2015’s Good For You which debuted at #9 with 179,000 copies sold the first week.
Mind you, I’m comparing Demi’s 2013 stats with Selena’s 2015 stats.
Miley for the most part was always commercially successful mainly because Hannah Montana’s world domination was in a league of its own. In 2013, We Can’t Stop debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 with first-week sales of 214,000 downloads.
So this is to give you a visual of where the girlies were back in the day which differs a lot from where they all are now.
With Demi’s non-strategic genre change and bad image marketing, she fell off commercially in the DWTD era and has been down since.
Selena makes her coin on lucky collabs such as Calm Down, but still can’t manage a hit since the Bieber-left-me serenade known as Lose You To Love Me.
And Miley got an organic hit with Flowers despite the Endless Summer Vacation era underperforming due to her lack of promotion and rumored news of joining a cult.

From coworkers to friends to enemies to besties?
Going off the healthy competition section, Selena was the Sabrina Carpenter to Miley’s Olivia Rodrigo. Olivia effortlessly racks up #1 after #1 and hit after hit while Sabrina is clawing her way to a hit and still gets overshadowed by peers.

And as I exposed in a HIP, Sabrina feels like she has all the factors and finds herself more deserving than what others have.
2013 was a big year of competition for Miley, Selena, and Demi.
However, Selena & Demi were more friendly as Selena was battling some serious drug addiction and Demi was lending a hand before and after she went to rehab. This is also around the time Taylor disowned Selena and would not claim her or support her publicly (this happened in 2014 after Selena’s 1st rehab trip).
Taylor tried to pretend she didn’t disown Selena by saying this at the end of 2014:

Of course, none of this is publicized because Demi was more lowkey about her helping Selena, but if you read this blog then you know the tea.
I explained everything there is to know about Demi and Selena in that post ^ so I will elaborate about Miley and Selena here because I’ve never really talked about them aside from Selena being The Other Woman™️ during the Niley drama.

Miley & Demi weren’t close either. In November 2014, Demi was asked about her friendship with Miley & she said, "Um…yeah…that, um…we're, we're like... We're acquaintances… It's life, and people change. I don't have anything in common with her anymore. I wish her the best."
2013 miley was iconic tho
Miley was kind of like the outcast during this time because she was acting crazy publicly and everyone thought she lost her mind. That’s why Miley said it was petty drama between them in 2020.
Selena would use the backlash Miley would get in the media to capitalize as the artist who’s the only “normal” Disney girl who never went to rehab. She spoke too soon considering she landed in rehab in the first month of 2014.
She rode that train almost as hard as she rides the “I’m Too Single and Ugly” train she often gets a ticket for nowadays.
Miley was her Bieber back in the day. She would wake up, get her coffee, shade Miley, and go on about her day. It was part of her morning routine.
I don’t know what her problem was 😭
She would throw shade at Miley’s haircut and her tongue pose that she also got lashings for.
She literally did that a day after the VMAs.
There was a constant competition between who’s classier and Miley stans would always tell Selena stans, “Selena can only get #1s on the Classy Charts, not the Billboard ones.”
This is my Roman Empire because teenage Angela was there for this when the blog first started in 2013. And just like the double standard we see today with Selena getting a pass for literally anything that someone else gets lashings for, the same was the case back in the day.
Miley didn’t always respond to Selena’s shade, but she did shade her a few times after:

Anyone who deals with Selena usually can’t stand her because there’s not enough oxygen in the room to be shared with Selena Victim Gomez.
But here comes covid…. everyone’s dying and the world is sentimental.
Miley & Selena Become Friends
“Miley said that Selena reached out saying that she saw the show, loved it, and wanted to be on it. I’ve said for years that Miley doesn’t hold any sort of grudge against Selena, so it wasn’t shocking that they did the show together.” — what I wrote in 2020.
I completely forgot I did a post on them 😂
“Miley and Selena are cool again…. not cool in a sense where they’re talking every day and they’re like Selena with Taylor, but after Miley did her web show at the time of the pandemic just first started and everyone was in quarantine. Selena did guest star on that and you know how Selena used her for promo and stuff like that.” — my source
Miley did a web show called Bright Minded during the pandemic and it was fueled with nostalgia because she had a bunch of people on that she knew from years ago and took this moment as a way to rekindle. It was cute and tugged on everyone’s heartstrings.
Selena being on the show was the first white flag flown between Miley and Selena. That was the first time they had ever interacted since their feud.
Selena was also VERY FRAGILE during this time.

And then there were 2 additional updates:
Talking to Selena felt like she could fall at any given moment. She was visibly weak, fragile, and clearly struggling.
Of course Selena used Miley’s webshow as a way to reveal her bipolar diagnosis meanwhile Miley and Selena didn’t have any prior relationship.
It felt like trauma dumping during your high school reunion.
Remember, Miley said Selena asked to be on the show.

Hearing this from my source and watching their interaction back is crazy because if I didn’t know this information, I’d be like “why does Miley look like she couldn’t give a sh!t?”

The ENTIRE time, Miley was texting and just nodding her head whenever Selena would talk
and when she would look at her, it was this face 😐
Miley was sweet to her later through and I’m not saying Selena didn’t go through a lot, but Selena is a professional victim and she’s that person that whenever you talk to them, they always have something to complain about when literally the whole world has issues.
And Miley has known Selena for nearly 2 decades so Selena was talking to someone who knows her WELL.
But since then, Miley and Selena have become friendly.
Selena supported Miley during her Endless Summer Vacation album release which twins because we both had the same favorite song:
It’s also worth noting that this a post during the Hailey hate train and Selena would do this thing where she would interact with posts she knows will make her fans happy, to give her another brownie point and add fuel to the fire.
It’s things artists do where they try to get support from other fanbases by praising their fave and Selena is a veteran of that. A lot of artists do it nowadays to try to get Swifties to support them since Swifties love spending money.
For example, in the midst of the Benny Blanco meltdown, she went and commented on Ariana’s post to distract her stans from the lashings she was getting under that one post where she had that manic episode of hers.
Selena also wanted to be on good terms with Miley so she extended the hand and invited her to her 30th birthday party.
She gave a whole speech about how she invited everyone who was important to her in her 20s whether or not they are close and added that she “f*cking loves” Miley:
Her saying that kinda felt like a dig at Demi, but Demi also wants nothing to do with Selena so I’m not gonna place blame on Selena for not inviting her.
Notice how she threw herself a wedding-themed party and when I called that out first, I was the bad guy until she said it herself—“I threw myself a wedding.”
A different source also told me that Miley and Selena bonded over being in similar places in their life such as the man they’ve been with for a long time, moving on with someone else in their life.
… Not that I would ever compare Miam to Jelana, pls forgive me.
So that’s the update on Miley and Selena. There’s no bad blood and they got over their teenage/twenties feud. Good for them.
I only wonder where they would be if Selena hadn’t stopped shading Miley and stopped throwing the attacks first. It’s kind of annoying that things that can be all dandy and great once Selena puts the arms down.
But if works for them, then good for them.
Miley and Demi’s fizzled-out friendship
For months you guys kept asking me about Miley and Demi feuding because Miley unfollowed both Demi and Hailey Bieber at one point and everyone was like “omg she’s defending her bestie Selena.”
Demi unfollowed Miley back and Hailey is still following Miley despite Miley not following her.
It’s also worth mentioning that Miley went on an unfollowing spree at the time and she unfollowed a lot of people especially because a source told me she was going through a lot of family drama with her parents divorcing and seeing other people.
I don’t know if I should hold the follows to such a high standard or not, but 2 very reliable sources tell me nothing really happened between Miley and Demi.
One source told me, “There’s no bad blood between [Demi] and Miley. They’ve always been friends and I don’t see that ever changing but I just don’t think they cross paths much anymore.”
Another source said, “I think that Miley and Demi are in different places in their lives right now. They’re not enemies and they’re not close friends anymore… they’re acquaintances, if you will. There was never any bad blood between them. They’re just living life.”
“Selena has always been the outlier between those two, but then again it is Selena.”
Call me biased and whatever you want, but Selena loves trouble and she brings trouble.

I’ve dragged Demi and Miley on different occasions but I’m telling you right now, whenever Selena is involved, there is trouble because put her in any situation and she will be an instigator.
And there’s credibility in that because if you look at any circle Selena is part of, there is always the same recurring theme of chaos.
As Selena’s bestie told her, “stuff being normal and not having chaos is uncomfortable [to you]”

And don’t get me wrong, Demi and Miley are choatic in their own ways as well.
The 3 of them don’t get along together though, but at least we can appreciate this one interaction from 2019:
Miley and Demi can get along short term. You saw them on Miley’s Bright Minded livestream. They were cracking jokes left and right and hinting at hooking up during their Disney days.

But they are those friends you can see once every 3 years, laugh, and move on.
