Justin Bieber Releases R&B Track, "Yummy" for His Comeback (Review)

It seems like the stars aligned and Justin Bieber is finally starting his era for JB5. Ever since his R&B release of Journals, a compilation album that he put out in 2013, fans and the general public have been begging for R&Bieber. With his label pushing for pop during his 2015 comeback for “Purpose,” Justin has finally been able to get his way with “Yummy,” a track that currently serves as the lead for his upcoming album.

“Yummy” was able to garner about 6 million streams on Spotify during its first 24 hours, debut at #1 in over 30 countries on iTunes—including the US market, and it was followed by the release of its music video the next day, on January 4th.

So let’s talk. What does the ESMG Team think? How are stans feeling? How are locals feeling? Let’s discuss.

Yummy

Justin teased the song for some time on his social media and included it in the trailer for his docu-series; revealing snippets of the track every time. Initially, I was like this is a catchy and feel-good track. On top of that, it makes this Justin’s first R&B single for an era since “Journals.”

Despite my love for pop music, my music taste differs immensely. as some of my readers may know, I’m more into the rock genre, so I am usually not the biggest fan of EDM songs. With that being said, when “What Do You Mean” first came out in 2015, I was vibing with it and it was a great single, but like I said in my “Purpose” review, it’s not my cup of tea and I liked the acoustic version better.

As for “Yummy,” I absolutely love it.

Not only is it very catchy, it’s FUN!

Justin released a song that was kind of missing in the music industry. Lately, the music industry has consisted of the same old radio love song mixes and the occasional ballad here and there. The release of “Yummy,” takes away from the awkwardness that accompanies the month of January.

It’s like Christmas is over, so cancel the holiday songs. It ain’t summer yet, so forget about chilling. And it’s not fall depression, so what exactly does January classify as? I’ve always felt this way about this month because it’s the beginning of a new year—new decade in this case, so it’s like what is going to define this month?

And I love the fact that “Yummy” fits in any mood. Road trip? Check. Trying to cheer yourself up? Check. Out partying? Check. Trying to get some work done while it plays in the background? Check. It’s a song that’s basically a pleasant time.

The Music Video

I absolutely love the video and it’s everything I would want it to be.

Justin said that this fun and upbeat track is about his wife, Hailey Bieber, but again it’s not that deep of a song so I wouldn’t expect her to make an appearance or even have the video centered about her.

It’s not like the song has the lyrics of his most recent drop, “10,000 Hours” with Dan+Shay.

The music video uses food which is a nice play on the fact that “yummy” is used to describe food, but the lyrics subtly talk about sex. Using food as a play by play for sex, is something that is done in the music industry and it was interesting to see how Justin’s goofy ass put his spin on it.

My favorite part in the video is definitely towards the end where he breaks out in choreography. I loved that I hope to see more choreography from him this upcoming era.

The video had a lot of cute moments and overall it’s Justin having a fun time. I wouldn’t expect nothing too deep from a song called “Yummy” and neither should you.

Personally, I love the whole pink-vibe. The hair, clothes, and esthetic of it all is just something I really enjoyed.

I’ve seen mixed reviews from Bieber’s stans because some of them are like “WHOOHOO NEW COMEBACK” and others are like “Yummy is so childish, this is not what I expected.”

“Yummy Is Childish”

If you feel that way, chances are you’re just tired of dealing with Justin’s ex’s stans who are used to the same old boring ballad about the same old recycled relationship, every two years.

I don’t like people who can’t think for themselves.

Sure, the word yummy, is kind of annoying. It’s almost as annoying as the word moist. However, it’s FUN. What’s wrong with a FUN song?

I didn’t like seeing the same old boring tweets of:

*insert random pop girl’s song with some sort of storyline-lyrics*

*compare it with Yummy’s lyrics that just repeat yummy a lot*

And it’s just like, what did you gain from that? I can insert a meaningful song of Justin’s with very elaborate lyrics and compare it with a random pop girl’s song that contains repetitive/fun-like lyrics like “Yummy.”

I can compare “Life Is Worth Living” or “10,000 Hours” or “Purpose,” or the COUNTLESS CHOICES that Justin has of “deep and emotional” songs and compare it with a dumb track from a pop girl’s albums. Selective choosing isn’t a drag and it’s not cute.

Sometimes you guys get so lost in stan wars, that you don’t find yourself enjoying the music.

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t let my personal feelings come in between the music I enjoy. For example, I drag the hell out of Camila Cabello every month, and rightfully so for being a racist snake, but did I love her album, “Shameless?” Unfortunately, yes.

Same goes for Selena Gomez. “Look At Her Now” was one of the most annoying and stupidest drops of the year; yet I loved listening to it lmao

Sometimes songs can be STUPID and FUN. There’s no reason to be uptight as hell and want Justin to release a sad ass song like his ex did—to milk his name again (I won’t let you forget that), when he’s not sad.

giphy.gif

HE’S HAPPILY MARRIED. HE’S FINALLY STARTING HIS ERA. HE’S FINALLY EXCITED. Why would you expect a sad-drop as opposed to a hype one like “Yummy?”

Justin spent the last couple of years dealing with severe depression, anxiety, and drug dependency. So what if he wants to released a fun song with lyrics that are not that elaborate? Half of the songs that y’all enjoy out at parties—not you Gomez stans, you cuties sit at home because it’s past your bedtime at 7pm—consist of FUN and STUPID lyrics.

Now if you don’t enjoy Yummy because of a valid reason, like you hate its beat, which I don’t know how one could, then that’s on you sis.

“Justin released a dumb song about sex with his wife”

Not everything is that serious. Sure the song is inspired by how appealing Hailey is to him, but it doesn’t tell you anything about their relationship nor is it supposed to. It’s just supposed to be A FUN SONG. Justin is going to get depressing on the upcoming album so I don’t know why people are in such a rush to hear depressing stuff from him.

Justin was singing about Hailey in “10,000 Hours,” but stans want to talk about how he doesn’t “respect his wife” because they choose to focus on the lyrics of a fun song as opposed to their actual WEDDING SONG. Those of you who hate Hailey and Justin for no valid reason, you will choose anything and twist it to fit your false narrative. It’s so tiring.

However, in this household we can ENJOY the music without holding the baggage of stans! So consider the ESMG Team, BOPPING to “Yummy” and we’re super excited to see the first live performance. It better come with choreography or at that point, he can KEEP IT!

Overall, “Yummy” is a great R&B track that consists of a really catchy tune and it’s not meant to be taken as a serious song. This was a nice way to start a comeback with Bieber and get the locals on board as we watch him unravel the darkness that has encapsulated him in the past years, with the release of this upcoming album.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

P.S., if you have any chart-related questions; such as red/green/white updates on the iTunes charts, streaming debuts, digital sales, predictions, and all of that dumb stuff, you can ask. I’m pretty good at understanding the charts even though I don’t care which celebrity debuts at what since they ain’t paying my bills.

Side note: I love the fact that “Yummy” is being discussed for its actual composition (whether that’s hate or love) and not for any background drama used to milk some headlines, but that’s just me!
