Selena Gomez ditched the 2022 Grammys despite being nominated for the first time. Are the Biebers to blame? The real reason Selena made Revelación
After working overtime trying to get people to respect her in the music industry, Selena Gomez finally secured her first ever Grammy nomination for her Spanish album, Revelación. Selena said she cried like a baby when she found out about the nomination only for her to ditch the awards ceremony in 2022…
Too good for the Grammys? No that’s not the reason.
Filming for Only Muders in the Building? Nah, if A list celebrities such as Billie Ellish and Justin Bieber can make it work with their tour schedule, I’m sure she can too.
So what’s the reason?
Well Selena Gomez’s fans have convinced themselves that poor wittle Selena is shaking in crippling anxiety whenever the big bad Biebers are at an event because they will bully her or whatnot.
Originally, there was talk that Selena would attend the Grammys considering this is her first time being nominated and considering how hard it was for her to get this nomination, no one expects her to be nominated again for a while.
She was nominated for the category, Best Latin Pop, in which she said, that she cried like a little baby when she found out.
And when she first found out in November, she explained her shock in an Instagram post
So with her obvious excitement toward the nomination and her attending 2 award shows in the past 2 months, fans thought she’d attend the show where she’s nominated… but she didn’t.
First of all, yes, Selena doesn’t look forward to being at the same place where Justin and Hailey are going to be, but that’s not enough to deter her away from not going somewhere.
It also has to do with Selena not feeling her best lately and feeling like she isn’t in her prime, looks-wise.
Secondly, Selena has always felt out of place at the Grammy Awards because she’s always there in the shadow of someone else since she’s not secure enough in her music nor recognized for it.
She’s only attended twice; 2011 and 2016. It was rumored that she was Jusitn’s +1 at the 2011 Grammys and that she was Taylor’s +1 in 2016 since she starred in the Bad Blood music video which was nominated for a Grammy.
When it comes to music award shows, Selena is INSECURE. Especially at the Grammys because only respected artists are honored there and honestly Selena girl… if we got Addison Rae coming as her random boyfriend’s +1, you should be fine.
Also, Selena’s award was not televised and it was announced that she lost before the show even started.
It was announced during the Grammys preshow, that Alex Cuba won the award for Mendó instead.
Considering I’ve been running this blog since the Ice Age, I think you can trust me when I tell you that Selena does not like doing music and only likes music as an outlet to make her a big name. She was supposed to quit music in 2013 when she had like 20 acting projects lined up but they all flopped… badly.
She had no choice but to return to the one thing that made her a big star.
The Real Reason Selena Made Revelación
This brings me to why she made a Spanish album. I know she branded the Revelación era as something she’s always wanted to do because she’s proud of her heritage and whatnot, but that’s not true. That’s just the story they gave.
Selena only made a Spanish album so she can be taken seriously as a musical artist. She wanted something to differentiate her away from recycled-cookie-cutter pop stars and there were plans for the era IF it was going to be successful.
The era, unfortunately, tanked… badly. There was no return on investment and with Selena refusing to perform live, there was no way to promote the era.
Selena and her team hoped that this album would succeed in one specific category: critical acclaim.
And they succeeded at that:
They hoped that this critical acclaim would secure her a Grammy nomination… something they also succeded in.
However, they thought that she would win the Grammy since she would assumingly be the biggest star of the bunch. They also thought the era would perform better since Selena already had her American fanbase and the Latin community would only add to that.
But the main point of the era was to secure Selena critical acclaim in the music world which would later help her in the acting world because it just benefits her image in total.
It’s kind of like “well no recycled pop star would make a Spanish record if it wasn’t authentic to them, this shows Selena is a raw talent!”
Selena isn’t fluent in Spanish so she had to work overtime by hiring a translator and a vocal coach to help her out. This of course feeds the idea that she “cares” so much because she worked overtime to sound fluent, right?
No… she would have just made a fool out of herself if she pronounced Spanish words wrong whilst catering to that community.
This is also why the entire era lasted like 2 months.
Going back to the Grammys, sometimes artists have a heads up about whether or not they’re winning especially when the category isn’t going to be aired.
I’ve also been told that in some cases, artists know a day or 2 in advance. It all depends on who they are, what type of connections they have, how stingy the academy will be with revealing this info, and so on. There are literally a million different ways this can go.
For example, Taylor knew she wasn’t winning anything at the 2022 Grammys and therefore she didn’t attend.
Back to Selena and Revelación, do you think that that era was worth blocking out 2 months of other projects to get critical acclaim and respect? Let me know.
I see a little bit of Rihanna in Selena in the sense that Rihanna hated music and wanted to build her own empire so she doesn’t have to rely on music.
That’s Selena in terms of the acting world. If there was a Grammy award for best businesswomen, Selena would win 43 Grammys because she has built herself as the ideal businesswomen with her ventures just growing every year.
But there isn’t.
That’s all for this post. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
