Let's Take A Stroll Down Memory Lane Back to Selena Gomez's 'Rare' Era: Let Me Get Me, Cut You Off, and Kinda Crazy

Selena Gomez/ VEVO

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane back to 2020… said no one ever. I know, I know, I am sorry for taking us back to this year but I just published a song analysis video about Selena’s album Rare. If you recall the day Rare came out, I wrote an album review on it.

I gave it a 6/10 and I credited most of the songs as “grower songs” where the more I listened, the more I’ll like. Well, a whole year later and they finally grew on me.

Here I was engaging in my Selenator behavior and jamming to Rare when I realized that Selena actually has some nice lyrics where she talks about self-sabotage, drinking and being stuck in a downwards spiral. All things I’ve said about her in the past.

In this video, I analyzed 3 of my favorite songs of off Rare which are Let Me Get Me, Cut You Off and Kinda Crazy.

Let Me Get Me

Despite Selena’s fans hating this song, I automatically liked it. From the start, I realized that Selena was talking about self-sabotaging behaviors because she literally says “I won’t let me get me down.” During the video, I brought moments from Selena’s interviews that show her talking about therapy helping her realize that SHE can’t keep feeding HER spiral.

I know her fans love to pretend that everything is dandy and sweet with our girl Sel, but behind closed doors, she is actually often very depressed and emotional. This song brings you behind the scenes with her in a very subtle way where she rarely admits that… hey! Maybe I’m the problem.

Cut You Off

Cut You Off is literally self explanatory—it’s about cutting off a person who was toxic. Obviously, most of these songs are about Justin Bieber so in order to cope, Selena started telling herself that she needs to fully cut off this person.

I hope Justin and Selena BOTH cut each other off. It’s an entirely toxic relationship one way or another. Even in the video, I talked about how I don’t care who is right or wrong, they clearly never make it work so might as well just end it.

Since we are on the unfortunate topic of Jelena, I might as well post the messages I got last week. I wasn’t going to because I didn’t find it relevant, but here:

“Jelena still lives beyond Justin’s marriage. I got word that Selena’s team are still praying the press to mention the two.”

deep sighs everyone… deep sighs.

It’s a nasty business and Selena’s team sees the downhill in Selena’s stats since the lack of Bieber-milking so I guess they gotta do what they gotta do.

Kinda Crazy

I actually love this song, it’s so (at the risk of sounding like Selena) fun. I think it’s an interesting take on Selena viewing her relationships and giving it to us from her point of view. I do believe this song is about Justin and in recent posts, I’ve been describing Jelena as a drug to each other. They were so passionate and toxic they literally drove each other crazy.

Selena drove herself crazy obsessing over Justin and seeing him as something she owned for years. So obviously with that unhealthy mindset, she crashed in burned in the long run while Justin crashed and burned right after the break up (aka Bizzle).

Selena cites herself as someone who has an “addictive personality” so keep that in mind for when you see her function.
